Abstract

The water sector faces critical challenges in achieving sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. In this seminar, we explore our innovative scalable technologies that contribute to decarbonization while enhancing advanced water treatment efficiency. This comprehensive study in transversality explores the application of biochar in advanced water treatment processes, highlighting its high-efficiency potential in phosphorus removal and recovery, micropollutant catalytic oxidation, and carbon-negative operation in a single novel platform. The research spans laboratory, field pilot-scale, and full-scale trials at municipal Water Resource Recovery Facilities, showcasing the effectiveness of biochar-integrated systems in improving water quality, contributing to food security by nutrient-upcycled biochar recovery, and contributing to climate crisis mitigation as a dose-dependent Negative Emissions Technology. Overall, the results demonstrate the potential of carbon negativity to become a water treatment performance standard as important and attainable as pollutant and pathogen removal.

Short Bio

Greg Möller is a professor in the Soil and Water Systems Department and the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at the University of Idaho, with a joint appointment at Washington State University. He teaches courses in sustainability, toxicology, risk assessment, and global health. His research explores advanced water treatment engineering, working with nature and not against it. Professor Möller has six of his water tech patents commercialized, with about 120 installed municipal and industrial systems on three continents. His technologies treat billions of liters of water each day, impacting the lives of millions of people. He is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors and the recipient of the Water Environment Federation, Harrison Prescott Eddy Research Medal. Professor Möller has been teaching online since the early 1990s advent of the web. Working with over 100 scholars and filmmakers across the globe, he created his documentary style, online open course Principles of Sustainability, styled as a digital Aristotelian Peripatetic School based on his studies in Greece during a Fulbright Fellowship. One of the 40 presentations in that course, A Planet in Peril, is the recipient of the El Capitan Award at the Yosemite International Environmental Film Festival. Professor Möller was recognized with the National Excellence in Teaching Award from the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities, whose membership represents the largest 250 universities in the US.

The event will be broadcast live through the official TUC and EURECA-PRO facebook pages and will be recorded, while photographic material will be taken. The digital material will be displayed on the websites and on the official channels of the Technical University of Crete and the European University EURECA-PRO and will be published on social media, press releases and newsletters.
